Why did the House Republicans deliberately sabotage the economy in April & May with the Debt Ceiling threat?

The point is that if you want to stop borrowing, then you have to pass a budget that either cuts spending, raises taxes or both. Simply stopping the debt ceiling seems to be a way to destroy the country on purpose. Likely hoping that the people - who are ill informed based on our mainstream media - will blame Obama.
